Senior Alert Scheme (SAS)

What is it?
The Seniors Alert Scheme is here to help older adults live safely, independently, and with peace of mind in their own homes. Supported by a government grant and managed through Pobal, the scheme provides a free personal monitored alarm, giving you or your loved one’s confidence and security every day. Local community and voluntary groups in your area are on hand to support you, making it simple and reassuring to stay safe at home.

How does it work?
The Seniors Alert Scheme offers people aged 65 and over a free personal alarm, which can be worn as a pendant or wristwatch. If you need assistance, simply press the alarm—it connects wirelessly to a base unit, typically linked to your home phone, and immediately alerts a 24-hour monitoring centre, so help is always just a button away.

How do you get an alarm?
To get started, contact a local community or voluntary group in your area—they can submit the application for you. Alternatively, you can reach out to Care Direct 24/7, and we’ll connect you with a nearby community group to assist with your application.

How much does it cost?
The Seniors Alert Scheme is free. You receive the personal alarm and the first year of monitoring at no charge. If a landline is not available and the alarm connects via a mobile signal, an annual SIM rental fee will apply. After the first year, a small monitoring fee will be required.

Who is eligible?
The Seniors Alert Scheme is available to anyone aged 65 or older who wishes to apply for a personal alarm.
